Sadiq Umar has opened up about the possibility of ending his international career with Nigeria following the Super Eagles’ failure to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The forward revealed that he has not reached a final conclusion yet, explaining that he wants to take time and carefully assess his next move when the new football season begins.
I am thinking of retiring from the Nigerian national team, but I will make the final decision when the new season begins, Umar said.
The striker also reflected on Nigeria’s disappointing World Cup qualification campaign, admitting that the setback was painful but insisting that the team must now look ahead.
I can’t really mention the cause of our failure, but that is behind us now. We just need to focus on the next World Cup, which will be in four years, he added.
Umar’s recent absence from Super Eagles squads has also raised questions about his position within the team. The attacker suggested that competition for places could be one reason behind his exclusion, considering the number of talented forwards available to Nigeria.
I was not called up. Maybe my profile is not the type they need. Nigeria is blessed with abundant talent,” he explained.
Despite his uncertainty, Umar remains focused on making the right decision for his career and personal ambitions. The striker is expected to determine whether he will continue his journey with the Super Eagles once the new season begins.
