Softfootball had gathered that the Argentine stopper, whose future at Aston Villa remains uncertain, was injured on 20 May 2026 when he fractured the ring finger of his right hand.

The injury occurred during the pre‑match warm‑up just moments before kick‑off for the UEFA Europa League final in Istanbul. Despite the fracture, Martínez famously played through the pain, kept a clean sheet, and helped Aston Villa defeat SC Freiburg 3–0 to secure the trophy.

Argentina, the defending champions, will face Algeria on Wed 17 Jun, 02:00 GMT, and with the likes of Lionel Messi, Emiliano Martínez, Rodrigo De Paul, Julián Álvarez and many others available, this forms a major advantage for the South Americans as they begin their title defence.
