There is still some confusion surrounding the situation, as reports from external sources also suggest that Alonso had agreed to take the Chelsea job earlier in negotiations. Despite that uncertainty, Chelsea are believed to be strongly pushing forward with the appointment of the former midfielder, who reportedly left Real Madrid on 12 January 2026.

Chelsea’s managerial search intensified after the club dismissed Enzo Maresca on 1 January 2026. On the other hand the club also parted ways with Liam Rosenior following a disappointing run of performances, prompting the Blues to move quickly in securing a new long-term leader.
