Former England national football team defender Ashley Cole has been appointed as the new head coach of Serie B club Cesena FC.

According to a report shared by football journalist Fabrizio Romano on his X account, the 44-year-old has taken on his first senior managerial role after several years working in coaching.

Romano confirmed:

Ashley Cole has signed in as new Cesena manager in Italian second division Serie B.

Softfootball can confirm Cole moved into coaching in 2019 following his retirement from professional football. He began his coaching journey within the academy setup at Chelsea FC and later held roles with Everton FC as he built experience on the sidelines.

Meanwhile, his former club Chelsea suffered a 1–0 home defeat to Newcastle United on March 15, 2026, with Anthony Gordon scoring the decisive goal after an assist from Joe Willock.

The result sparked strong reactions from supporters online, with many fans directing criticism toward Clearlake ownership following the surprise loss at Stamford Bridge.

Cesena confirmed the appointment in an official statement, revealing that Cole has signed a contract running until June 30, 2026, with an option to extend. The Italian club currently sit eighth in Serie B, a position that keeps them within the promotion playoff places.

During his playing career, Cole established himself as one of the greatest left-backs of his generation, winning three Premier League titles with Arsenal FC and Chelsea, as well as lifting the UEFA Champions League. He also earned 107 caps for England. Cole previously played in Italy with AS Roma between 2014 and 2016.
