Barcelona authorize Marc André ter Stegen to travel for medical tests at Girona today. Ter Stegen will join Girona on loan — no buy option clause, straight loan. Here we go, confirmed.

The 33-year-old keeper is set to join Girona FC on a straight loan until the end of the season, with no permanent purchase option included.

Ter Stegen’s absence from Barcelona’s squad for their UEFA Champions League tie against Slavia Prague kind of confirms the transfer is almost done. The medicals in Girona are expected to clear the way for an official announcement soon.

Barcelona and Girona have reportedly reached a verbal agreement for the loan. Ter Stegen has agreed to it, and most see the deal as good for everyone involved. Girona gets a reliable, experienced goalkeeper, while Barcelona can ease some of the wage burden from their roster, something they have been juggling for a while now.

The German keeper has only featured once this season, mostly because of injury and competition from Joan Garcia, so getting regular minutes is important. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup coming up, he needs consistent game time if he wants to stay Germany’s number one.

Financially, Girona will pay around €1 million of his salary, while Barcelona continues covering roughly 90%. It’s a compromise that helps Barça with the wage cap but still lets Ter Stegen play at a high level.

Having joined the club back in 2014 and racking up 423 appearances, Ter Stegen still has a contract until 2028, but this loan is seen by many as a stepping stone to a possible permanent exit in the summer.
