Ruben Amorim says Manchester United “played like an adult team” in their 2-0 win over Sunderland at Old Trafford on Saturday, a result that gave the Reds a first clean sheet of the season and marked the Portuguese’s 50th game in charge.

Softfootball understands that United , who had Senne Lammens making his debut in goal, struck twice in the first half through Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko. While Sunderland’s Robin Roefs pulled off several saves to keep the scoreline down, Lammens also impressed with key stops at crucial moments, ensuring a much-needed shutout for Amorim’s side.

Reflecting on the performance after the game via the team’s official website, Amorim admitted it wasn’t flawless but praised his players’ maturity, he said:

“Of course it’s so much better to win games. We were a team that were an adult team. We didn’t play well all the game, but we had our moments and we defended well. I think Senne did a great job and gave us confidence. It was a good day, not a perfect day, but to win like this with a clean sheet is important for our team.”

The United boss also highlighted how Lammens benefited from the support of his teammates, he stated:

“We need to understand that we need everyone to be ready to play. It’s a long season, we have a lot of problems, anything can happen. The important thing is that the teammates helped Lammens a lot to have a very good performance.”

Amorim was quick to remind his players that consistency is key, stressing the need to replicate home form away from Old Trafford, he said:

Every team, especially the big teams, need to win every game at home, but we need to perform the same way at home and away.

He also singled out Amad Diallo for praise, pointing to the Ivorian’s energy and work ethic:

It’s not just the way he attacks, but the way he defends. He runs forward a lot and he’s always a threat when he has the ball one against one. We are really pleased with him and we missed him a lot last game, so he did really well.

Meanwhile, Sesko was lauded for more than just his goalscoring instinct, with Amorim eager to stress the striker’s all-round contribution:

He has the potential to do so much more. That is the good thing on Ben. The small details, not just on the goals. Of course, he lives for the goals and the media puts a lot of pressure on him to score as a striker but the important thing is that every time we kicked the ball today he was there, every time, and for me it’s the most important thing. We have to build [him] up because in this club we have to perform but he’s doing really well. He’s working really well, and again he has a lot to improve.

Meanwhile, after the game Manchester United in a post via their official X handle, was quick to praise the young belgian goalkeeper making his debut for the club and keeping a clean sheet , the first for the Red Devils this season, they posted;

Looking ahead, Amorim was clear that the focus must quickly shift to United’s next challenge after the international break, a daunting trip to Anfield:

We have to forget that game. Of course it’s really important to win games and have a better feeling but we need to forget this game and go for the next one, so tomorrow we just forget about everything. We need to win the next one.

Manchester United have now won three straight games at Old Trafford for the very first time under Ruben Amorim, the Red Devils will go in into the International break with a lot of confidence. With Liverpool awaiting after the break, United’s task is clear, build on Saturday’s momentum, tighten up further, and show that Amorim’s men can deliver not just at Old Trafford, but on the biggest away stage in the Premier League.
