Ryan Giggs urges major rebuild with Delap and Cunha top picks

Ryan Giggs

Manchester United’s dismal 2024–25 campaign has club legend Ryan Giggs calling for sweeping changes, suggesting the team needs as many as nine or ten new signings. While United still have a shot at Europa League silverware in the upcoming final against Tottenham, their domestic form has been far from acceptable.

The team currently sits in a shocking 16th place in the Premier League, having lost nine home matches — a record that matches their worst ever season in 1930–31, when they were relegated. Scoring has also been a major issue, with only Everton and the relegated teams managing fewer goals.

With a lack of firepower up front, Giggs believes attacking reinforcements must come first. Manchester United are pursuing Ipswich striker Liam Delap, who’s available for £30 million after his club’s relegation, along with Wolves forward Matheus Cunha.

Giggs considers both players exciting options. He believes their Premier League experience will offer immediate benefits, not just for the fans but for morale inside the dressing room. According to him, signings like Delap and Cunha would give players and supporters a much-needed lift ahead of pre-season.

New manager Ruben Amorim is facing the massive task of reshaping the squad to suit his style. The club is also dealing with uncertainty over goalkeeper Andre Onana’s future, and they may look to strengthen the midfield and wing-back positions as well.

Despite calls from fans to overhaul the squad, Giggs is realistic about how long that will take. He stressed that United simply can’t overhaul the team in one window and that Amorim might need multiple transfer periods to build a competitive side.

Giggs expressed particular concern about the lack of depth up front, recalling the days when United had multiple elite strikers like Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Teddy Sheringham, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The contrast with today’s squad — which includes just one recognised striker — is, in his words, a joke.

For Giggs, rebuilding starts at the top end of the pitch. The potential additions of Delap and Cunha may not be the full solution, but he sees them as the right kind of players to begin the reset at Old Trafford.
