After Manchester United’s disappointing 18th Premier League loss of the season at Chelsea, Roy Keane delivered harsh criticism aimed at three of the club’s brightest young stars—Rasmus Hojlund, Kobbie Mainoo, and Alejandro Garnacho.

United’s performance at Stamford Bridge was lackluster ahead of their Europa League final clash with Tottenham, with the team struggling to create meaningful chances. Centre-back Harry Maguire posed the biggest threat in attack, despite his goal being ruled offside.

Once again, Hojlund failed to make an impression up front. His game was marked by weak hold-up play and mistimed runs. Chelsea, forced to use academy talent Tyrique George due to suspension issues, looked more composed in attack than United.

Keane was particularly critical of Hojlund’s performance, suggesting the striker appeared like an academy player himself. He argued that top strikers at elite clubs like United should be able to create their own moments, showing hunger, skill, and game intelligence—traits he claimed Hojlund lacked.

While Hojlund’s struggles were in focus, Keane also took aim at Garnacho and Mainoo. He noted that Mainoo’s late appearance off the bench did little to impact the game, criticizing the young midfielder for passive movement and careless passing. Garnacho, on the other hand, was accused of playing in flashes and lacking the consistency needed at this level.

These three youngsters—once celebrated for a shared moment of joy at Old Trafford—now face growing scrutiny. With transfer rumors swirling around Mainoo and Garnacho, Keane questioned whether United should even fight to keep them, suggesting they’ve shown too many flaws and not enough growth during a difficult season.

According to Keane, relying on this trio to shape United’s future is a gamble not worth taking.
