Softfootball observed that City manager Pep Guardiola appeared short of answers as his side struggled to match Madrid’s efficiency in front of goal.

The star of the night was Federico Valverde, who produced a sensational performance by scoring the first senior hat-trick of his career.

Valverde opened the scoring in the 20th minute, assisted by Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. He doubled Madrid’s lead in the 27th minute, finishing a move created by Vinícius Júnior.

The midfielder completed his hat-trick in the 42nd minute, with the third goal assisted by Brahim Díaz. Madrid nearly added a fourth goal in the 58th minute, but Vinícius Júnior’s effort was eventually ruled out.

Despite controlling much of the ball, Manchester City could not convert possession into goals. City finished the match with 60% possession, compared to Madrid’s 40%, but the scoreline told a very different story.

City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma received a yellow card in the 57th minute, while defender Rayan Aït-Nouri was also booked in the 82nd minute.

Manchester City were not the only Premier League side to struggle in Europe this week as Chelsea also suffered a heavy 5–2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, while Arsenal were forced to settle for a 1–1 draw against Bayer 04 Leverkusen after a late penalty.

Elsewhere, Newcastle United played out a 1–1 draw with Barcelona, and Tottenham Hotspur were defeated 5–2 away by Atlético Madrid.

All five Premier League representatives reached the Champions League Round of 16 this season. Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Tottenham qualified directly from the group stage, while Newcastle advanced through the playoffs after defeating Qarabağ FK 6–1 away and 3–2 at home.

Those strong performances earlier in the tournament led many fans and pundits to argue that Premier League clubs were superior to teams from leagues such as La Liga, Bundesliga, and Serie A.

However, this week’s results have challenged that narrative, with several English teams suffering heavy defeats across the competition.

For Manchester City, the focus now shifts to responding in the next leg and restoring confidence after one of their toughest European nights of the season.
