PSV Eindhoven have confirmed that defender Sergiño Dest will be sidelined for the coming period after suffering an upper leg injury during their recent home victory over AZ Alkmaar, Softfootball reports.
Medical examinations carried out on Sunday confirmed the injury, although the club stated that it remains difficult to determine exactly how long the 25-year-old will be unavailable. The 37-cap United States men’s national soccer team international is now targeting a return toward the final phase of the season.
In a message shared by the club on their official x handle after the diagnosis, Dest expressed optimism about his recovery and determination to return to full fitness before the campaign concludes.

Medical Update Sergiño Dest PSV will be without Sergiño Dest for the coming period, medical examinations confirmed on Sunday. The 25-year-old defender was forced off during the home win against AZ with an upper leg injury. It is still difficult to predict exactly how long Dest will be sidelined.
The 37-time US international is aiming for a return towards the final phase of the season, with the World Cup next summer in the United States, Canada and Mexico as an important target.
“I will do everything within my power to be fully fit again towards the end of the season, and I’m confident that will happen,” Dest said. “Thank you for the many heartwarming messages. That support only gives me extra motivation to work hard on my recovery.”
The injury occurred during the second half of PSV’s match against AZ when Dest chased down defender Wouter Goes inside his own penalty area. After a full sprint, the full-back suddenly grabbed his left hamstring and collapsed to the ground in visible pain.
Dest was seen covering his eyes while lying on the pitch and was eventually substituted in the 57th minute. He required assistance from two members of the medical staff and was unable to put weight on his left leg as he left the field.
PSV head coach Peter Bosz admitted after the match that the situation initially looked concerning.
He landed on the ground after a full sprint and grabbed his hamstring. That’s usually not good news.
Bosz explained.
The injury comes as another setback for Dest, who previously spent nearly 11 months on the sidelines after suffering a serious ACL injury in April 2024 during his time at FC Barcelona. That injury forced him to miss the 2024 edition of the Copa América.

Dest has since rebuilt his form at PSV and remains an important player for both club and country. The defender has made 37 international appearances and started all four matches for the United States during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
With the next 2026 FIFA World Cup set to be hosted in the United States, Canada and Mexico next summer, returning to full fitness will be a major priority for the right-back.
If Dest were unable to feature for the national team, alternatives could include Tim Weah—currently contracted to Juventus and on loan at Olympique de Marseille—as well as defenders Joe Scally and Alex Freeman.
Despite the injury concern, PSV still managed to secure victory in the match thanks to a late goal from Ricardo Pepi. The striker scored the winner from close range in the 86th minute, marking his 10th league goal of the season and his 13th across all competitions in 26 appearances.
Elsewhere, Barcelona have received positive news regarding young midfielder Marc Bernal, who avoided an injury scare after experiencing stomach problems during the weekend match. The teenager is expected to return to full availability next week.
In other transfer developments, Arsenal are preparing to complete the permanent signing of Piero Hincapié from Bayer Leverkusen in June. The deal will cost €52 million, with the German side also securing a 10 percent sell-on clause as part of the agreement.
