Club Career

Athlético Paranaense

Born in Araxá, Minas Gerais, Neto moved from Cruzeiro to Athlético Paranaense as a teenager. He made his professional debut in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A at 19, keeping a clean sheet in a 3–0 win over Grêmio Barueri on 16 August 2009.

Following the departures of Rodrigo Galatto and Vinícius, Neto became the first-choice goalkeeper in 2010. He was sent off in the opening match against Corinthians but returned after a two-match suspension, playing regularly until called up for the Brazil national team in October.

Fiorentina

In January 2011, Neto joined Italian club Fiorentina for €3.5 million. Initially a backup to Artur Boruc, he made his debut in a 2–1 Coppa Italia win over Empoli and played his first Serie A match in April 2012.

By the 2013–14 season, he had established himself as Fiorentina’s first-choice goalkeeper, featuring in their Europa League campaign and the 2014 Coppa Italia Final, which they lost to Napoli. In 2014–15, he helped the team reach the Europa League semi-finals before moving to Juventus.

Juventus

Neto signed a four-year contract with Juventus in July 2015. Primarily a backup to Gianluigi Buffon, he played in Coppa Italia matches, keeping a clean sheet in the 2016 final against AC Milan.

In his second season, he made his Champions League debut and started all Coppa Italia matches, helping Juventus secure their third consecutive domestic double.

Valencia

In July 2017, Neto joined Valencia on a four-year deal for €7 million plus add-ons. He was the club’s first-choice goalkeeper for two seasons, though Jaume Doménech played in the Copa del Rey. Valencia won the 2019 final against Barcelona.

Barcelona

Neto moved to Barcelona in June 2019 for €26 million plus €9 million in bonuses. Signed as a backup to Marc-André ter Stegen, he made limited appearances, including a Champions League group stage win over Inter Milan in December 2019.

In 2020–21, Neto played in the first six league matches and three Champions League fixtures due to Ter Stegen’s injury but lost his place once the German returned.

AFC Bournemouth

Neto joined AFC Bournemouth on a free transfer in August 2022. Initially a backup, he became the first-choice goalkeeper after a few games. He suffered a hamstring injury in October 2022 but returned in January 2023, earning praise for his quick recovery. In 2023, he was named club captain.

Loan to Arsenal

On 30 August 2024, Neto joined Arsenal on a season-long loan. He made his debut in a Champions League match against Girona on 29 January 2025.

International Career

Neto received his first call-up to the Brazil national team in September 2010 but did not play. He was part of Brazil’s squad for the 2012 Olympics, playing in the group stage before being replaced by Gabriel as the team won a silver medal.

In 2015, he was named as a standby for the Copa América but was later added to the main squad after Diego Alves was injured. However, he did not play in the tournament.

On 12 September 2018, Neto finally made his senior debut in a 5–0 friendly win over El Salvador, eight years after his first call-up.
