João Félix Sequeira was born on November 10, 1999, in Viseu, Portugal. His football journey began in FC Porto’s academy, but after being released due to his slight frame, he joined Benfica’s youth system in 2015.
At Benfica, Félix quickly made an impact, debuting for the first team in August 2018. His breakout season in 2018-19 saw him score 20 goals in 43 appearances, helping Benfica win the Primeira Liga.
His stunning performances, including a UEFA Europa League hat-trick against Eintracht Frankfurt, made him one of Europe’s most sought-after young talents.
Big-Money Move to Atlético Madrid
In July 2019, Atlético Madrid secured Félix’s services for a record €126 million fee, making him the fourth-most expensive player in history at the time. Expected to fill the void left by Antoine Griezmann, Félix faced challenges adapting to Diego Simeone’s rigid system. Despite flashes of brilliance, injuries and inconsistency hampered his performances. Across four seasons, he managed 34 goals in 131 appearances, struggling to meet lofty expectations.
Chelsea Loan and La Liga Return
Seeking a fresh start, Félix joined Chelsea on loan in January 2023. Though he showcased his technical brilliance in the Premier League, his stint was short-lived, with just four goals in 20 appearances. Returning to Atlético Madrid in the summer of 2023, he found himself out of favor, leading to another loan move, this time to FC Barcelona.
Revival at Barcelona
Joining Barcelona on loan for the 2023-24 season, Félix seemed rejuvenated under Xavi Hernández. His technical prowess and creativity complemented Barcelona’s attacking style. Early performances suggested he was regaining his confidence, reigniting discussions about his long-term future at the club.
International Career with Portugal
Félix made his senior debut for Portugal in 2019 and has since been a key figure in the squad. He featured prominently in UEFA Euro 2020 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup, contributing crucial goals and assists.
Future Prospects
As of 2025, Félix’s career remains at a crossroads. His talent is undeniable, but questions linger about his consistency and ability to thrive in a structured system. Whether he will secure a permanent move to Barcelona or seek new pastures remains to be seen, but his journey continues to intrigue football fans worldwide.
