Carney Chibueze Chukwuemeka was born on 20 October 2003 in Austria to Nigerian parents. Of Igbo descent, he later moved to Northampton, England, where he grew up. His older brother, Caleb Chukwuemeka, is also a professional footballer.
Club Career
Aston Villa
Chukwuemeka began his football journey at Northampton Town before joining Aston Villa’s academy in March 2016. In July 2020, he signed his first professional contract with the club.
He made his senior debut on 19 May 2021 in a 2–1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, coming close to scoring as he hit the post. Days later, he was named Aston Villa Academy Player of the Season and played a key role in Villa U18s’ FA Youth Cup triumph.
Chukwuemeka earned his first senior start on 24 August 2021 in a 6–0 EFL Cup win over Barrow. Four days later, he made his first Premier League start in a 1–1 draw with Brentford, earning praise for his performance.
Chelsea
On 2 August 2022, Aston Villa and Chelsea agreed on a deal for Chukwuemeka’s transfer, which was finalized two days later when he signed a six-year contract.
He scored his first senior goal for Chelsea on 20 August 2023 in a 3–1 loss to West Ham United but was later substituted due to a knee injury.
Loan to Borussia Dortmund
On 3 February 2025, Chukwuemeka joined Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund on loan for the rest of the season. The deal included an option to make the move permanent.
International Career
Eligible to represent Austria, England, and Nigeria, Chukwuemeka chose England, making his U17 debut before progressing through the youth ranks.
In 2022, he starred in England’s UEFA U19 European Championship-winning campaign, scoring three goals, including one in the final against Israel. His performances earned him a spot in the UEFA Team of the Tournament.
He later featured for England U20, participating in the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Personal Life
Chukwuemeka attended St. James CofE Primary School and Northampton School for Boys alongside his brother.
