Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie have reportedly decided he would leave the club if a suitable offer arrives. The 23-year-old was seen in tears following their match on Saturday, perhaps a departure is inevitable.
Leverkusen still want to keep their centre-back and see him as an important part of the team, but interest from England is looming. Softfootball reported earlier that Chelsea have been linked with a move for the Ecuadorian defender after Levi Colwill sustained an ACL injury in training earlier this month.
Enzo Maresca has said publicly that he wants to sign another defender before September’s deadline. Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal have also monitored the player in recent months.
According to Fabrizio Romano via his X handle, Hincapie is keen to leave Bayer Leverkusen before the summer transfer window closes. Several Premier League clubs are monitoring the situation closely, with Tottenham having made an enquiry 10 days ago.
His tweet reads:
“Piero Hincapié wants to leave Bayer Leverkusen ahead of the end of the summer window.
Premier League clubs attentive after Tottenham made an enquiry 10 days ago.
Release clause available: €60m.”
Hincapie has made 165 appearances for Leverkusen since arriving from South America in 2021. He formed part of the club’s unbeaten Bundesliga title success in 2023/24 and has established a reputation for confident ball-carrying from defence.
Last season, he ranked among the Bundesliga’s top 10 players for touches and progressive carrying distance. Piero Hincapie is reportedly worth €50 million, and has a release clause of around €70 million.
Should Chelsea or Spurs continue with their interest in signing the Ecuadorian international, they would have to pay said release clause to secure his signature since Leverkusen are not considering a sale of their starting centre-back this late in the transfer window.
