Jordan Pickford isn’t taking his England jersey for granted with a new manager on the way.
The Everton goalkeeper addressed the looming competition for his position in a conversation with the Liverpool Echo, making clear he plans to earn his spot rather than assume it.
Softfootball learnt that Pickford tied his international future directly to his club form, saying:
There’s definitely new energy and there’s going to be a lot of competition for places. But that’s what it’s about.
For me, I always say you’ve got to be on form for your club to get picked for your country.
I’ve always looked at it that way. I’ll go back to Everton now, I’ll work hard on the training pitch, I’ll get myself prepared right for a Saturday and give it my best shot every time I put my shirt on for the club.”
With Thomas Tuchel expected to shake up his squad selections, Pickford’s approach of simply performing week to week may prove his safest bet.
