Softfootball can confirm Manchester United chief executive Omar Berrada has opened up on his decision to join the club, describing the opportunity as one he simply could not turn down.

Speaking in a recent interview on Manchester United’s official YouTube channel with journalist Andy Mitten, Berrada reflected on his move from Manchester City in 2024 and explained why the chance to work at Old Trafford was impossible to ignore.

It was completely unexpected. It happened really quickly. When I was fortunate enough to be offered the role, what I said to my wife is: ‘I just can’t pass this up. It’s the biggest club in the world.’ The opportunity to be part of this great institution is unique, and I wouldn’t want to wake up in 20 or 30 years regretting not having given it a go. Really, I didn’t hesitate.

The wide-ranging discussion covered Manchester United’s transfer plans, the decision to hand head coach Michael Carrick a new contract, and Berrada’s long-standing connection to football. The club have already confirmed their first signing of the summer after completing a €45 million deal for Éderson, marking the first major addition ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

The United CEO also revealed he will be supporting Morocco at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Born in Paris to Moroccan parents, Berrada recalled how Morocco’s historic run at the 1986 World Cup played a major role in sparking his passion for the game.

I’ve always supported Morocco. My first football memory is the 1986 World Cup. It was the first time that an African country went beyond the group phase, and then they lost to West Germany. I was massively into football from a very young age.
