Nottingham Forest have completed the signing of Austria international Xaver Schlager on a free transfer after reaching a full agreement with the midfielder.

Softfootball understands that Schlager has signed a contract until June 2028, with the club holding an option to extend the deal by a further year until June 2029. The 28-year-old has already completed his medical, clearing the way for the official announcement.

The move follows initial reports that Forest were moving quickly to secure one of the most experienced free agents available this summer.

Schlager arrives after leaving RB Leipzig at the expiration of his contract, bringing international experience to Nuno Espírito Santo’s midfield. Renowned for his work rate, ball-winning ability and composure in possession, the Austrian is expected to add leadership and quality to Forest’s squad ahead of the new campaign.

The transfer also puts an end to speculation surrounding his future linking Schlager with a move to Juventus, who were said to be monitoring the midfielder as a potential free-agent signing. The Italian giants had reportedly discussed his profile internally since January as they explored midfield reinforcements for the summer window.

However, Nottingham Forest have won the race for his signature, with the Premier League club acting decisively to complete the deal before rival suitors could make their move.

The signing reflects Forest’s ambition to strengthen their midfield with proven experience as they prepare for another Premier League campaign, while Schlager begins a new chapter in English football after several successful seasons in Germany.
