Manchester United’s struggle for goals has cast a shadow over another frustrating Premier League campaign. Hovering near the bottom half of the table, currently sitting 14th and level on points with Wolves, the Red Devils are staring at a summer that demands a significant rebuild.
One player who could be central to that overhaul is Matheus Cunha. The Wolves forward, who has notched up 20 goal contributions in 30 appearances this season, is gaining attention from several top-flight clubs — and United seem to be leading the race.
Despite Cunha signing a new deal with Wolves in January, his £62.5 million release clause keeps the door open for a summer switch. Early negotiations between his camp and Manchester United are reportedly positive, hinting that the Brazilian could soon make Old Trafford his new home.
Cunha’s versatility and adaptability are among his biggest assets. Operating either as a central striker or an attacking midfielder, he thrives in tactical systems similar to Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1. That flexibility could be key, especially given the struggles of United’s current options, Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund, who have failed to consistently lead the line.
Although Amorim’s system isn’t ideal for all attackers, Cunha’s experience in a comparable setup under Vitor Pereira has seen him flourish. His willingness to drop deep, link play, and take on defenders adds a dynamic edge currently missing in United’s attacking third.
Yet, his potential arrival doesn’t come without concerns. Cunha’s discipline has raised eyebrows — two red cards this season have led to a six-game ban. Additionally, while he can play up front, his most effective performances for Wolves have come in a deeper role. That could reignite familiar selection dilemmas for Amorim, especially with Zirkzee and Hojlund already competing for central roles.
The Brazilian forward has made it clear he’s ready for the next step. After turning down January exits out of loyalty to Wolves during a relegation scrap, he’s now aiming for a club fighting for silverware and European competition.
United’s pursuit of Cunha might hinge on their Europa League success. Without Champions League qualification, funding his release clause could prove challenging. Even so, the club’s need for attacking reinforcements makes this a move they’re unlikely to ignore.
In a season filled with disappointment, Cunha represents a potential spark — a player who could offer United the attacking impetus they’ve sorely lacked.
