Two of the brightest sparks from Chelsea’s goalless Premier League opener against Crystal Palace were teenagers Josh Acheampong and Estevão Willian.

19-year-old Acheampong was handed the responsibility of stepping into the backline after injuries to Levi Cowill and Wesley Fofana out for a considerable period of time, leaving Maresca short of defensive options.

Having to go to battle against a physical Jean-Philippe Mateta, the Chelsea Academy graduate, stood tall, producing solid tackles, winning duels, and showing composure on the ball in difficult moments.

Meanwhile, summer arrival Estevão gave Chelsea fans a glimpse of what he can do after being introduced in the second half. The Brazilian winger immediately brought in renewed energy down the right, beating Tyrick Mitchell with skill and creating chances, even if his debut goal eluded him on the night.

Speaking after the game, via the club official website, Enzo Maresca was full of praise for the two youngsters. On Josh Acheampong, he said:

“Josh was very good. We showed our confidence in Josh last year as he played some games for us. Today he did very well; he dealt with Mateta very well, so overall he had a good game.”

He was equally impressed with Estevao’s performance, he said:

“Estevão was very good. He showed personality and he is already showing that in our training sessions and for no doubt – slowly, slowly – he will become a very important player for this club.”

The performance of both teenagers will encourage Chelsea fans who are eager to see more of Cobham’s talents and new signings stepping up in this new era under Maresca.

With Acheampong gradually finding his role in defence and Estevão already having moments of brilliance in attack, the future really looks bright at Stamford Bridge.
