Manchester United move for Onana replacement who impressed at Club World Cup

Manchester United’s search for a goalkeeper has led them to a standout performer from the Club World Cup who is available for a bargain fee this summer and can finally land Ruben Amorim a much needed Andre Onana replacement.

Softfootball understands that the goalkeeper spot was a major issue for Man Utd as they endured a disastrous campaign overall, with both Onana and Altay Bayindir failing to cover themselves in glory. Indeed, for much of the summer so far, it’s been reported that Amorim has chased a new No.1.

However, Goal reports that United have registered an interest in John Victor, the 29-year-old goalkeeper who starred for Botafogo during their recent Club World Cup win over Paris Saint-Germain.

A major factor towards their interest is the presence of an $8 million (€6.8m) release clause in John’s contract, and United are said to have made an enquiry for the Brazilian, with a formal offer anticipated after some additional meetings between the club and the player’s representatives.

John is believed to have rejected interest from teams such as Tottenham in January, and the goalkeeper extended his contract in order to add the release clause and raise his profile towards a big move during the Club World Cup.

The Brazilian went on average 3.3 saves per game as Botafogo eventually exited the competition at the hands of Palmeiras at the last-16 stage.

While United have been offered the chance to sign the likes of Martinez and Ter Stegen, both players would come with significant wages, a costly investment that the club are looking to avoid given their tight constraints.

Cheaper options may prove the most realistic for United although much will depend on outgoings such as Bayindir, as well as the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony, all of whom are set to leave Old Trafford this summer.

In an earlier update, Softfootball reported that Manchester United’s move to sign Calvert-Lewin comes with a plot twist. Just when the move seemed off, a twist has revived Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s chances of joining Man. United, with Ruben Amorim eager for attacking reinforcements after a 15th-place finish.

The 13-time Premier League champions believe the 28-year-old would bring qualities they currently lack and could offer him a lucrative contract that includes bonuses for appearances.
