Manchester United have initiated discussions to sign Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi amid growing uncertainty surrounding Andre Onana’s future at Old Trafford.
Reports suggest Monaco have expressed interest in the Cameroonian shot-stopper, who has endured two inconsistent seasons since arriving from Inter Milan in a £47.2 million deal. Onana added fuel to speculation by refusing to rule out a summer move during a recent charity appearance, stating: “Will I leave? I don’t know, we’ll see.”
Monaco, who secured Champions League qualification after finishing third in Ligue 1, are prioritising a new goalkeeper. Club executive Thiago Scuro admitted the position was a weakness last season, making Onana an appealing target.
United are already considering replacements. Talks have begun with Carnesecchi’s agent, though no formal approach has yet been made to Atalanta. The 24-year-old, who extended his contract until 2028, is reportedly valued at around €50 million (£42.7m).
Former Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini, now Roma manager, recently praised Carnesecchi’s development, highlighting his decisive saves and reliability between the posts, while acknowledging there’s still room for improvement with his distribution.
The Italian keeper, capped regularly at youth level, was included in Italy’s senior squad for recent World Cup qualifiers, although he has yet to earn his first cap.
Alongside Carnesecchi, United have also held discussions regarding Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez. The Argentina World Cup winner is believed to be open to a move to Manchester should an offer materialize.
If Onana does depart, United will need to act swiftly, with pre-season fast approaching and manager Ruben Amorim eager to have his squad in place for the upcoming campaign.
