Luis Filipe linked with Atletico Madrid job after Flamengo’s Club World Cup heroics

Luis Filipe’s stock continues to rise in European football following Flamengo’s stunning victory over Chelsea at the Club World Cup. His performance as head coach has now sparked serious speculation from Spain, with the former full-back being tipped as a possible future replacement for Atletico Madrid legend Diego Simeone.

Spanish journalist Javier Gomara has reported that Filipe is “highly respected” at Atletico, both for his tactical understanding and his deep-rooted history with the club. The 38-year-old spent over six seasons under Simeone’s guidance and played a key role in their golden era, with his coaching approach showing clear shades of the Argentine’s defensive solidity and structure.

Although Simeone currently remains secure in his role, especially after signing a new deal until 2027, the noise around Filipe’s coaching potential is hard to ignore. Atletico have been through an up-and-down period recently, including a mixed Club World Cup campaign that began with a heavy defeat to PSG and a scrappy win over Seattle Sounders.

While Simeone’s legacy includes eight major titles and two Champions League finals, there’s growing awareness that long-term planning might soon be required. Filipe, with recent domestic success and now international recognition at Flamengo, is positioning himself as a name to watch for the future.

The young Brazilian coach led Flamengo to the Copa do Brasil title last year and has continued to attract media praise for his tactical acumen and calm presence on the sidelines. Marca previously spotlighted his meteoric rise, and since then, several outlets have kept close tabs on his progress.
