Didi Hamann has advised Liverpool to consider parting ways with Darwin Nunez this summer, proposing a bold move that could help them secure one of Europe’s most exciting young forwards, Jamie Gittens. Nunez, who cost ÂŁ85million when he arrived from Benfica in June 2022, has struggled to establish himself as a consistent starter at Liverpool, registering only five Premier League goals this season.
Despite the expectations that Nunez would replace Roberto Firmino as Liverpool’s long-term striker, his time at Anfield has been marked by inconsistency. As the Reds look to refresh their attacking options, Hamann suggests that a swap deal with Borussia Dortmund for Gittens could benefit both parties.
Gittens, a 20-year-old forward who made his name at Manchester City’s academy, has caught the eye of multiple Premier League clubs with his impressive performances for Dortmund. However, under new manager Niko Kovac, Gittens has found himself sidelined, and with his desire to take the next step in his career, he could be ready to move on this summer.
Hamann believes a potential swap deal involving Nunez and Gittens makes sense. “Gittens had a fantastic start to the season, but since the arrival of the new manager, he hasn’t started many games. However, he came off the bench and scored recently, and he could be an impactful player in the future,” Hamann said.
While Gittens was valued at €100million earlier this year, Dortmund might revise this figure downward given his reduced role in the team and his wish to move. Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United are reportedly interested, though former Liverpool player Ryan Babel suggests Arsenal could be the frontrunner for Gittens’ signature.
Babel added that Arsenal, needing to strengthen their squad for Champions League football, could be the ideal destination for the talented young forward, which would also be a big move for Gittens. He believes Gittens would be a perfect fit for Mikel Arteta’s system and could add significant quality to the Gunners’ attack next season.
