Liverpool Seek First League Win of 2026 Against Newcastle

3 Min Read

Liverpool’s season has taken a frustrating turn in recent weeks, and last weekend’s 3–2 defeat to Bournemouth summed up their problems, softfootball reported.

After falling two goals behind, the Reds fought back, only to concede a late winner in injury time. It was the third time this season Liverpool have conceded a 90th-minute winner in the Premier League, more than in any previous campaign.

That defeat ended Liverpool’s 13-game unbeaten run and extended their winless league streak to five matches, dropping them to sixth place. They are now facing the possibility of going six league games without a win to start a calendar year for the first time since 1954.

There was some relief in midweek, though. Liverpool produced a dominant 6–0 win over Qarabag at Anfield to secure their place in the Champions League last 16. That result extended their unbeaten home run across all competitions and offered a timely confidence boost.

After Liverpool shared training photos on their X handle ahead of the upcoming clash with Newcastle United, a fan reacted strongly in the comments, saying the club must urgently sign a new centre-back.

Liverpool need to sign a centre-back, we cannot go through the season with just Van Dijk and Konaté as senior CBs. Continuing like this is criminal.

Newcastle United arrive at Anfield with mixed form. They were beaten 2–0 at home by Aston Villa last time out, a match that highlighted their struggles without Bruno Guimaraes in the starting lineup. That loss dropped the Magpies to ninth, five points off the top four.

However, Newcastle showed resilience in Europe, earning a 1–1 draw away to Paris Saint-Germain to reach the Champions League playoff round. Despite that, their away league form remains a concern, with just three wins on the road all season.

Team News

Liverpool are dealing with major defensive problems. Jeremie Frimpong is ruled out, while Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate are doubts. Newcastle will be without Joelinton, while Bruno Guimaraes is expected to return.

Possible Lineups

Liverpool:
Alisson; Szoboszlai, Endo, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Wirtz, Gakpo; Ekitike

Newcastle United:
Pope; Thiaw, Botman, Burn; Trippier, Guimaraes, Tonali, Hall; Barnes, Wissa, Gordon

Prediction

Liverpool’s home strength should prevent defeat, but their current struggles in front of goal may allow Newcastle to come away with a point.
