Steven Gerrard has backed Liverpool to remain at the top of English football following their dominant Premier League title win under new manager Arne Slot. The Reds clinched the trophy with four games to spare, finishing ten points clear of their nearest challengers, despite concerns over how they’d cope after Jurgen Klopp’s exit.

Gerrard, now watching from the sidelines, sees Liverpool as the “team to catch” next season. However, he warned that the Premier League remains unforgiving, and up to five rivals—including Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle, and Aston Villa—could pose a serious challenge.
Manchester City, in particular, are expected to bounce back after missing out last season. Gerrard expressed caution over Pep Guardiola’s side, especially with a fully fit squad and fresh recruits on the horizon. He highlighted Rodri’s absence as a key factor in City’s recent dip but is confident they’ll return stronger.
Liverpool’s plans to stay ahead are already in motion. The club retained key figures Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, who both signed new deals despite speculation about summer exits. Gerrard stressed the importance of keeping these “world-class” players, suggesting their commitment could be the most vital business Liverpool completes this window.
In addition, Liverpool have already secured the signing of Dutch full-back Jeremie Frimpong and are in advanced discussions with Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz. The German playmaker, valued at over £100 million, could further elevate the squad’s creativity and attacking depth.

Gerrard praised Wirtz’s performances under Xabi Alonso and believes that if Liverpool want to stay ahead of the pack, continuous investment is necessary. He noted that although last summer was quiet, building on success is key to sustained dominance.
With recruitment underway and a strong core remaining, Gerrard is confident Liverpool will not only defend their title but push for even more silverware next season.
