Lisandro Martinez has criticised Manchester United’s hierarchy following their disappointing 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid, insisting the club should have done more to strengthen the squad after last season’s success.
The Argentine defender expressed his frustration over the club’s recruitment strategy, arguing that Manchester United need more quality players to compete with Europe’s leading teams. Softfootball understands that Martinez’s comments have added to the pressure surrounding the club following another difficult European night.
Speaking to CBS, Martinez highlighted the importance of strengthening the squad, saying the club’s leadership should have brought in more players to match the improvements made by rival teams.
He pointed out that several competing clubs had signed numerous players, leaving Manchester United needing further investment to remain competitive across major competitions.
The defender’s remarks came after Atletico Madrid secured victory through goals from Pablo Barrios and Ademola Lookman. United’s task became even more difficult after Leny Yoro was sent off, leaving Michael Carrick’s side struggling to recover from the setback.
Martinez also raised concerns about the tendency to blame managers and players whenever results decline. He believes responsibility should extend beyond the dressing room, with the club’s leadership also accountable for building a squad capable of delivering consistent performances.
His frustration comes despite his previous determination to return to football after serious injury struggles. Martinez has also played an important role for Argentina, including during their 2026 World Cup campaign, demonstrating the resilience that has helped define his career.
However, his latest comments have shifted attention towards Manchester United’s recruitment decisions and ambitions. While Martinez acknowledged that the players themselves must improve, he made it clear that stronger squad investment is necessary if the club hopes to compete successfully at the highest level.
