Leeds and Sunderland battle to sign Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Garcia

Leeds United and Sunderland are locked in a transfer battle to sign promising Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Garcia during the summer window.

Garcia, 21, has been in superb form at the Club World Cup, scoring twice and providing an assist in just three games. He also enjoyed a prolific 2023/24 campaign with Real Madrid Castilla, netting 25 goals in 36 league matches, and even managed a goal in four senior appearances for the first team.

Despite this, Garcia’s future at the Santiago Bernabeu remains uncertain. Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso, speaking recently, praised the young striker’s attributes and work ethic, likening him to club legend Raul. However, Alonso admitted no final decision has been made regarding his future, as the focus remains on the Club World Cup.

According to reports from Fichajes, Sunderland are ready to propose a loan deal with a mandatory €15m (£12.8m) buy clause, rising by €5m (£4.3m) if they avoid relegation. Leeds, on the other hand, are prepared to offer a direct €20m (£17m) transfer fee.

However, Real Madrid are expected to insist on a buyback clause worth around €30m (£25.6m) in any agreement to maintain long-term control over Garcia’s future. Roma and Real Oviedo have also expressed interest in acquiring the striker.

Real Madrid are actively exploring attacking reinforcements for next season, with targets including Ante Budimir (Osasuna), Niclas Fullkrug (West Ham), and Roberto Firmino (Al-Ahli). Still, many believe Garcia is already the ideal backup to Kylian Mbappe, and letting him go could be a decision the club regrets.

The coming weeks will reveal whether Real Madrid choose to cash in on the rising star or keep him as part of their long-term attacking setup.
