In a statement shared by transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano on his official X account, Barcelona president Joan Laporta compared contract renewals for key players to making major new signings.

As gathered by Softfootball, Laporta during his interview with El Chiringuito, highlighted the importance of keeping core talents such as Pedri and Lamine Yamal at the club. According to the Barcelona president, securing long term commitments from top performers has become as valuable as bringing in high-profile transfers.

Romano reported:

Joan Laporta: “Signing a top player? In my view, getting new deals done with all our key players is like a new signing”, told El Chiringuito.

Laporta’s comments reflect Barcelona’s current financial strategy as the club continues to operate within the strict spending limits imposed by La Liga’s salary cap rules. Since 2021, the Catalan giants have focused heavily on renewing contracts for emerging stars and key first-team players rather than pursuing expensive signings on the transfer market.

The approach comes as Barcelona continue to manage financial challenges, with the club previously reporting debts of around €1.35 billion, forcing a more sustainable squad-building model built around youth development and internal stability.

Earlier this week, Barcelona were held to a 1–1 draw by Newcastle United in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 on March 11, 2026, a result that has sparked debate about their chances of winning the competition.

Elsewhere, Erling Haaland’s agent Rafaela Pimenta has dismissed speculation linking the striker with a move to Barcelona, confirming there has been no contact between the parties.
