Real Madrid have confirmed that Kylian Mbappe has been hospitalised in the United States after missing their Club World Cup opener against Al-Hilal due to illness.
The French star, 26, had taken part in training with his teammates in Florida last Sunday ahead of the match, but did not feature in Tuesday’s session after reporting flu-like symptoms. Manager Xabi Alonso revealed Mbappe had developed a fever and was being monitored closely.
“Kylian was feeling a little better, but not enough,” Alonso said before the game. “It’s better for him not to train. We’ll wait until the last minute.”
Despite initial hopes that he would recover in time, Mbappe was not named in the squad for Madrid’s 1-1 draw against Al-Hilal at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium on Wednesday night.
Madrid have since issued an official statement confirming that Mbappe is suffering from acute gastroenteritis—a common but potentially serious stomach condition marked by vomiting, diarrhea, and fever. The club said the forward has been admitted to hospital for further tests and treatment.
“Our player Kylian Mbappe has acute gastroenteritis and has been hospitalised for various tests and treatment,” the statement read.
Mbappe’s availability for Madrid’s next group match against Mexican side Pachuca on June 22 remains uncertain. They are also scheduled to face Red Bull Salzburg on June 27.
The news will come as a concern to fans, especially with Mbappe recently joining Madrid and expectations high during the Club World Cup campaign. While the condition is usually short-term, Madrid’s medical staff are expected to take a cautious approach given the intensity of upcoming fixtures.
Alonso and the club remain hopeful Mbappe will return before the end of the group stage. For now, his recovery will be closely monitored.
