Kai Rooney has taken another important step in his development at Manchester United after making his debut for the club’s Under-21 side in a Premier League 2 clash against Nottingham Forest.

The 16-year-old forward, son of former United captain Wayne Rooney, came off the bench in the 77th minute with the score level at 2-2. However, his first appearance ended in disappointment as Forest scored a late winner to secure a 3-2 victory.

Meanwhile, Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has reportedly been fined following his public criticism of the club’s squad and leadership after their Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid. The Argentine centre-back questioned the club’s support for the team, prompting discussions with senior figures at Old Trafford. The matter is now understood to be closed following those discussions, allowing the club to shift its focus back to football.

Kai’s debut also carries a family connection, given that Wayne Rooney made his senior debut for Everton at the age of 16 in 2002 before becoming one of Manchester United’s greatest players. The former England captain scored 253 goals in 559 appearances for United, establishing himself as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer.

Kai has already progressed through United’s youth teams and recently received a scholarship with the club’s academy. His Under-21 appearance represents another milestone, although he will need to continue working hard to follow his father into senior football.

For Manchester United, the evening brought mixed developments, a promising moment for the next generation through Kai’s debut, but another disappointing result for the academy side.
