Jose Mourinho has been reportedly sacked by Turkish Super Lig side Fenerbahce following the club’s failure to qualify for the Champions League after they were eliminated by Benfica in the playoff round on Wednesday.
The 62-year-old ‘Special One’ had been in charge of Fenerbahce since June 2024. Mourinho oversaw a second place finish in the Turkish Super Lig, 11 points behind champions, and arch-rivals, Galatasaray.
Mourinho’s spell in Turkey has been turbulent, including an incident in April when he grabbed the nose of Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk in the Istanbul derby, earning him a three-match ban and a fine.
Now, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano via his X account, Fenerbahçe have parted ways with José Mourinho, with the Portuguese coach set to leave the club. The decision comes after the team failed to secure qualification for the Champions League. The post reads:
“BREAKING: Fenerbahçe part ways with José Mourinho as Portuguese head coach won’t continue at the club.
The decision has been made after missing on qualification to Champions League.”
At the time of filing this report, Fenerbahce are unbeaten in their 2025/26 league campaign after two games. Meanwhile, their absence from the Champions League now stretches to 17 seasons.
