Jack Wilshere says Arsenal need more than a No9

Jack Wilshere has cautioned Arsenal against thinking a marquee striker signing will be a quick fix to their title aspirations. Speaking ahead of Soccer Aid, the former Gunners midfielder acknowledged that while a top-class No.9 would help, it’s not a standalone solution to the club’s challenges.

Arsenal have finished second in the Premier League for three consecutive seasons under Mikel Arteta, with last season’s title bid collapsing late due to squad fatigue and injuries. In response, the club has prioritised signing a prolific striker this summer, with Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres emerging as key targets.

Despite the focus on goalscoring reinforcements, Wilshere argued that Arsenal must strengthen other areas too. “It’s not just about scoring goals,” he said, adding that the team’s supporting structure and overall squad depth will be just as vital if they are to claim the title next season.

Wilshere did express confidence in Arteta’s long-term vision, crediting the manager for implementing a solid five-year plan and improving the team significantly. However, he noted the lack of silverware remains the one missing piece, something Arteta will be especially eager to correct.

Pointing to Arsenal’s consistent high-level performances over the last two years, Wilshere emphasized that, statistically, they’ve been among the league’s most reliable sides. But unless they “find a way” to convert that into a title, their progress risks feeling incomplete.

Beyond a striker, Arsenal are close to finalising a deal for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi as part of plans to reinforce their central midfield. They’re also exploring wide attacking options, with Real Madrid’s Rodrygo reportedly on the radar.

Arteta is not expected to overhaul the squad entirely, but targeted upgrades across key positions are in motion as Arsenal aim to finally break their Premier League title drought.
