Ilkay Gundogan appears set to remain with Manchester City for another season after a dazzling brace in their 6-0 Club World Cup demolition of Al-Ain. The 34-year-old midfielder was named man of the match as Pep Guardiola’s side sealed their progression to the knockout rounds in style.
In a post-match interview, Gundogan addressed growing speculation about his future. “I think so, yes,” he said when asked if he would stay beyond the summer. “I have a one-year contract and I’m very happy here. I think everyone knows that.”
He expressed confidence in his fitness, pointing out that he didn’t miss a single match last season. “I still believe I have several years in me to play at the highest level. I feel good and want to keep going,” he added.
City reportedly remain open to selling Gundogan if a suitable offer arrives, with Turkish giants Galatasaray interested in a cut-price move. However, Guardiola’s decision to include him in the Club World Cup squad suggests he remains a key part of City’s immediate plans — especially when Jack Grealish and Kyle Walker were left behind.
During the current 2024–25 campaign, Gundogan has already featured in 52 matches across all competitions, registering five goals and seven assists. Rejoining from Barcelona last summer, he has consistently started important fixtures, including 25 Premier League games and six in the Champions League.
Guardiola previously commented that players not part of his vision were excluded from the travelling squad — reinforcing the notion that Gundogan remains central to City’s setup. However, the Catalan boss has also hinted at the need to streamline his team ahead of the 2025–26 season.
Across two stints with City, Gundogan has made 356 appearances, scoring 65 goals and supplying 46 assists. His trophy haul since arriving in 2016 now includes 14 major honours — a testament to his enduring influence at the Etihad. For now, the German maestro looks poised to stay in Manchester, at least for one more season.
