Historic Upset as Grimsby Stun Manchester United in EFL Cup to win 12-11 on Penalties

Manchester United are out of the Carabao Cup in humiliating fashion; they lost 12-11 on penalties to League Two side Grimsby Town after a 2-2 draw at Blundell Park.

Softfootball reported that the English giants were favourites to defeat their League 2 opposition, and that is exactly why the defeat goes down as one of the biggest shocks in the club’s history and piles pressure on head coach Ruben Amorim.

Grimsby posted a defiant message on their official X account with a clear message that they shouldn’t be underestimated.

They posted:

Grimsby flew out of the blocks and stunned their Premier League visitors with a dominant first-half performance. Charles Vernam broke the deadlock before Tyrell Warren, once of United’s academy, doubled the lead after capitalising on a mistake from goalkeeper Andre Onana.

United looked lifeless for much of the game, but late substitutions sparked a comeback. Bryan Mbeumo pulled one back with 15 minutes to play before Harry Maguire rose highest in the 89th minute to head home an equaliser, forcing extra time and eventually penalties.

What followed was one of the longest shootouts in recent memory. Both sides converted flawlessly through the first 11 rounds, with even defenders and goalkeepers stepping up. When Bryan Mbeumo came forward for his second attempt, needing to score to keep United alive, he rattled the crossbar, sparking a pitch invasion and delirium in the home stands.

For Grimsby, it was a night of glory that can be described as a giant killing and a famous night for the club. For United, it was another bitter low point in a winless start to the season, with Amorim facing growing questions over his future.

Grimsby now advance to the third round, while United’s cup campaign ends before it ever really began.
