Graham Potter has signed a new long-term contract as head coach of the Sweden national football team, extending his stay until June 2030, Softfootball reports.

The agreement was confirmed by Fabrizio Romano via his official X handle on March 12, 2026. The new deal ensures Potter will remain in charge through the next World Cup cycle.

Fabrizio posted:

Graham Potter signs new deal as Sweden national team head coach until June 2030.

Potter, 50, was appointed Sweden head coach on October 20, 2025 after the dismissal of Jon Dahl Tomasson. Tomasson was sacked following a shock 1–0 defeat to Kosovo national football team during the qualification campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a result that effectively ended Sweden’s chances of automatic qualification from Group B.

Before taking the national team job, Potter had been dismissed by West Ham United in September 2025 after a poor start to the Premier League season. Despite that setback, he quickly emerged as the leading candidate for the Sweden job due to his previous coaching success in the country.

Earlier in his managerial career, Potter guided Östersunds FK from the fourth tier of Swedish football to the top flight and famously won the Svenska Cupen in 2017, establishing a strong reputation within Swedish football.

Sweden endured a difficult qualifying campaign, losing three of their opening four matches. Potter was unable to immediately change the team’s fortunes, suffering a 4–1 defeat to Switzerland national football team in his first match in charge. The campaign ended with a 1–1 draw against Slovenia national football team, leaving Sweden bottom of Group B.

However, Sweden still have a path to the World Cup thanks to their strong performance in the 2024–25 Nations League, where they topped their group and secured a play-off opportunity.

The Scandinavian nation will face Ukraine national football team in a crucial play-off on March 26. If they win that tie, they will face either Poland national football team or Albania national football team in a decisive match for a place at the World Cup finals.

The tournament will begin in June and will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Speaking after signing the new contract, Potter expressed pride in continuing his role with Sweden.

To be able to continue in this role means a lot to me.

Potter said in a statement released by the Swedish Football Association.

I feel both a great pride and a great responsibility. It’s a big day for me and a fantastic opportunity to do something important going forward. Sweden is a football country with a proud history of teams that have made it to the finals of major championships and competed there, which we want to return to.

Regardless of whether Sweden qualify for the 2026 World Cup, Potter will remain in charge through the next international cycle and will lead the national team until the end of the 2030 World Cup campaign.
