Bayer Leverkusen forward Jeremie Frimpong has opened up on his love for Nigerian music, admitting he leans toward Afrobeats artists more than those from his own Ghanaian heritage.
Speaking after Leverkusen’s 1-0 Champions League win over Inter Milan on Tuesday, the Netherlands international didn’t hold back when discussing his musical preferences with Nigerian journalist Oma Akatugba.
Softfootball gathers that Frimpong credited the sheer depth of talent coming out of Nigeria’s music scene, saying:
I listen to both, but Nigerian music is top, you guys have too many good musicians.
When asked to name a favourite, he added:
It’s difficult to name my favourite Nigerian musician, right now Asake is good, I went to his concert, it was top. You’ve got Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, there’s too many.
The comments come as several Nigerian artists, including Burna Boy, Tems, Asake, and Davido, secured multiple nominations at the 2025 Grammy Awards.
Frimpong himself was born in the Netherlands to Ghanaian parents before his family relocated to England, eventually representing the Netherlands at senior level.
