A recent viral clip from The Overlap podcast via their x handle has sparked lively discussions among football fans after former players shared their picks for the greatest films of all time, while Wayne Rooney also addressed several major football topics surrounding Manchester United and the England national football team.

the overlap podcast posted;

“What’s the best film of all time? Shawshank Redemption.

Bramble when he gets told to walk over the bridge by the sheriff and he walks back. Favourite scene ever. Yeah, Bramble. Shawshank Redemption. The journey this film takes you on… the best. Great question.

You know which one I love? Catch Me If You Can. And if I say Catch Me If You Can, Roy would say, ‘Well of course I can, because I beat you in a race.’

I love Braveheart. I like A Star Is Born I’ll probably get a bit of stick for that, won’t I?

Dirty Dancing. Grease. Who’s laughing round there? Jokers.

Taxi Driver ‘You talking to me?’

Chinatown. The original Roadhouse with Patrick Swayze.

Step Brothers. 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Has to be Shutter Island. Little Miss Sunshine.

It’s more modern I’d say Into the Wild.

Back to the Future. The Rock. Cars.

The Dark Knight. School of Rock.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

During the segment, panelists and guests debated their favorite movies, producing a surprisingly wide list of classics.

The Shawshank Redemption was quickly nominated as one of the greatest films ever made by rooney, with contributors praising the emotional journey it takes viewers on.

Softfootball reported that Other picks mentioned included Catch Me If You Can, Braveheart, A Star Is Born, Dirty Dancing, Grease, and Taxi Driver.

The conversation also included cult favorites like Road House, comedies such as Step Brothers, and modern classics including The Dark Knight and Back to the Future. The mix of choices quickly went viral across social media as fans debated their own favorites.

Away from the movie discussion, Rooney also voiced frustration about a viral stunt involving a Manchester United supporter known online as Frank Ilett, who pledged not to cut his hair until United won five consecutive games.

Rooney dismissed the situation as a distraction from the club’s progress under current leadership, saying the attention surrounding the “haircut saga” was taking focus away from the team’s performances.

Rooney also shared his thoughts on the tactical challenges facing England ahead of the next international tournaments. With players like Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham, and Harry Kane all competing for central roles, manager Thomas Tuchel has suggested the trio cannot easily fit into the same system.

Tuchel is reportedly exploring new tactical roles for Foden, potentially deploying him as a hybrid attacking midfielder or deeper playmaker rather than on the wing.

Rooney believes Tuchel’s long-term contract gives him the freedom to make bold decisions regarding squad selection. According to the former England captain, the manager can now take risks such as leaving out major stars without immediate pressure, allowing him to focus on building the strongest possible team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
