Softfootball understands that Liverpool needed a bit of luck and a lot of patience to escape with a 1-1 draw against Sunderland at Anfield on Wednesday night. Florian Wirtz was the one who made the difference.
The Germany midfielder let off a shot that took a deflection off Nordi Mukiele and ended in the net. That cancelled out Chemsdine Talbi’s earlier goal.

As reported by the club via their official X account, Florian Wirtz expressed confidence in Liverpool’s squad.
They posted:
Florian Wirtz is sure Liverpool will click into gear sooner rather than later due to the quality and character in their dressing room.
He said:
We have unbelievable quality in the changing room, personalities and great players. We just have still to find each other a bit more and to create a bit better momentum for us and then I think everything will go in our direction soon.
Wirtz also admitted after the game that he had mixed feelings.

He said:
I’m disappointed that we didn’t win. Of course, when you go 1-0 down it’s always better to get a point than zero, but of course we wanted to win.
He also stated the first half was tough. Chances were scarce, and the team struggled to find rhythm, but the second half felt better.
He said:
We didn’t have so many chances in the first half, I think, and we knew that we would get a few in the second half. We just had to be patient and to keep the pressure on, or even more than in the first half.
Liverpool tried hard for a winner, but Sunderland defended really well and even looked dangerous on the break. Still, the Reds avoided back-to-back home defeats.

Wirtz’s influence again showed he’s becoming central to Liverpool’s attack. Another bright performance after last weekend’s 2-0 win against West Ham.
Slot’s side now needs to work on consistency and better momentum in the games ahead. A draw might not feel like enough, but it keeps Liverpool moving forward.
