Softfootball can confirm UEFA has officially confirmed the cancellation of the highly anticipated Finalissima between the Argentina national football team and the Spain national football team.
The clash between the Copa América champions and the European champions was scheduled to take place in Qatar on March 26. However, the governing body announced that the match will no longer go ahead due to the current political situation in the Middle East.
UEFA explored several alternatives, including hosting the match at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium or organizing a two-legged fixture in Madrid and Buenos Aires. However, the Argentinian Football Association rejected both proposals.

Right after Manchester City were held to a 1–1 draw by West Ham United in Matchday 30 of the 2025/26 Premier League on Saturday, 14 March 2026, where the finalissma clash could have been moved to England or Germany Argentina was not Happy with the decision to play the competition at the Bernabeu in Spain, So why didn’t FIFA consider taking it to England, Italy or Germany? Why cancel the Tournament outright?
Football journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed the development in a post on his X account, noting that the game was initially planned for Qatar but ultimately cancelled after both federations failed to reach an agreement on a new venue.
Fabrizio stated:
UEFA announce La Finalissima between Argentina and Spain has been cancelled. Decision made following political situation in Middle East with match initially planned in Qatar, then no agreement on different venue between the Federations.

UEFA explained in a statement that while other feasible options were discussed, none proved acceptable to Argentina. Reports also suggest Argentina were unhappy with the idea of playing the one-off match in Spain.
The cancellation has raised questions about why the match was not moved to neutral venues such as England, Italy, or Germany instead of scrapping the tournament entirely.
Pep Guardiola has now dismissed suggestions that Manchester City’s Premier League title defence is over after their 1–1 draw with West Ham United on March 14, 2026.
