Fernandes’ 97th-Minute Penalty Rescues Manchester United in Five-Goal Thriller Against Burnley

Manchester United finally got their first Premier League win of the season as Bruno Fernandes stoppage time penalty gave united a dramatic 3-2 victory over Burnley at Old Trafford. The Red Devils are already under a lot of pressure following their midweek carabao cup humiliation against fourth-tier Grimsby Town, and questions were already being asked about Ruben Amorim’s future, Softfootbal reports.

United started the game on the front foot, with Martin Dúbravka called into action to deny early efforts from Leny Yoro, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo. Controversy struck soon after when Mason Mount appeared to have won a penalty, only for VAR to overturn the decision after a lengthy five-minute delay, leaving the home crowd furious.

United’s persistence eventually paid off in the 27th minute, due to fortunate circumstances. Casemiro’s header from a Bruno Fernandes free-kick rattled the crossbar, rebounding off Burnley’s Josh Cullen and trickling over the line for an own goal.

According to Manchester United’s official website, Amad and Mason Mount both went close to doubling the advantage before the interval, but Burnley somehow held firm to keep the deficit at one. After the restart, the Clarets stunned the home side when Jacob Bruun Larsen picked out Lyle Foster, who poked in his first Premier League goal since April 2024.

Yet, United hit straight back within two minutes, as Joshua Zirkzee released Diogo Dalot, who squared for Bryan Mbeumo to slot home his second goal in as many games. Softfootball understands the game turned into a frantic end-to-end battle from there. Foster thought he had equalised again but VAR ruled it out, before Fernandes went inches wide with a volley.

Burnley were not to be denied though, as Jaidon Anthony bundled home amid a six-yard box scramble to make it 2-2. Amorim’s men pushed desperately for a winner, with Benjamin Šeško guilty of missing two glorious chances.

Just when it seemed the points would be shared, Amad was hauled down in the box by Anthony, and Fernandes who had missed his last penalty against Fulham ,kept his nerve to bury the 97th-minute spot-kick. The win, United’s first in the league this season, lifts pressure off Amorim and may just spark a revival at Old Trafford.
