Rio Ferdinand singled out Casemiro for special praise following Manchester United’s commanding 3-0 victory over ten-man Athletic Bilbao in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final. The Brazil international played a crucial role in his team’s performance, scoring a header to open the scoring in the 30th minute after a brilliant assist from an unlikely source—Harry Maguire.
United dominated the first half, extending their lead seven minutes later when Bruno Fernandes converted from the penalty spot following Dani Vivian’s red card. Fernandes netted again just before half-time, taking his tally to seven goals in this year’s competition, giving United a 3-0 advantage going into the second leg at Old Trafford.
While the entire team put in a strong performance, Ferdinand was particularly vocal about Casemiro’s contribution, which he described as “sensational.” On TNT Sports’ commentary, the former United defender said, “Casemiro has been outstanding tonight. He’s been so disciplined, and people have been questioning his legs, but he’s really come to the fore when they’ve needed him most.”
Ferdinand also highlighted how Casemiro was guiding the team through such a pivotal moment in the season, crediting his leadership and composure in a key match. “He’s coaching this team through it,” Ferdinand added.
Robbie Savage, who joined Ferdinand in the commentary box, pointed out that Casemiro’s improved performance might be due to his role being more suited to his strengths. “Manchester United have realised what he’s good at,” Savage said. “He’s more facing the game now, and that suits him much better than when they were trying to play through him.”
Ferdinand agreed, noting that with the added support around him, Casemiro was less exposed in midfield, allowing him to play his best football. “They’re not asking him to be a pivot anymore where he’s facing his own goal and under pressure,” Ferdinand explained. “This role gives him more space, and that makes his job easier.”
Despite United’s dominant position, Casemiro remained focused and urged caution. “It’s not over,” he said after the match. “Athletic Bilbao are a team that never give up. We have to respect them and stay focused for the second leg.”
As United head back to Old Trafford with a three-goal advantage, Casemiro’s leadership will be key in helping them finish the job and secure a place in the Europa League final.
