Recap
Arsenal moved to within six points of Premier League leaders Liverpool with a commanding 5-1 win over Manchester City at Emirates Stadium.
With Liverpool extending their lead at the top after a victory at Bournemouth, Arsenal knew only a win would suffice to stay within touching distance of the leaders. They delivered in emphatic fashion, overpowering the struggling champions.
City, much like in their recent loss to Chelsea, handed Arsenal an early advantage. In the second minute, defender Manuel Akanji lost possession, allowing Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard to calmly finish Kai Havertz’s pass.
Despite a poor miss from Havertz in the first half, City equalized in the 55th minute when Erling Haaland scored with a header. However, Arsenal regained the lead just two minutes later when Thomas Partey’s shot deflected off John Stones and past goalkeeper Stefan Ortega.
The game was put beyond City in the 62nd minute when 18-year-old Myles Lewis-Skelly scored his first goal for Arsenal, his powerful shot leaving Ortega helpless despite a valiant attempt to save. Havertz, who had missed earlier, sealed the win with a precise left-foot finish to make it 4-1 in the 76th minute.
Things got even better for Arsenal as 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri, set up by Declan Rice, bent a fantastic shot into the far corner to complete the 5-1 rout.
Arsenal’s victory kept them in pursuit of Liverpool, with the young stars Lewis-Skelly and Nwaneri playing pivotal roles in the win. Lewis-Skelly’s rise has been particularly notable, with his first-half performance and second-half goal lifting the team to a two-goal cushion.
As City crumbled in the second half, it was a moment of relief for Havertz, who had been frustrated by his earlier miss. The Emirates erupted in celebration as Arsenal’s title hopes were given a significant boost.
Meanwhile, Manchester City’s poor form continued. After briefly leveling the match through Haaland, City’s defense crumbled again, allowing Arsenal to score with ease. The loss added to their string of disappointing performances, which included a shambolic second-half collapse against PSG in the Champions League. Manager Pep Guardiola appeared powerless as his side capitulated, and with their Champions League play-off against Real Madrid on the horizon, City’s form looks a real concern.
