Erik ten Hag, the former Manchester United manager, has reportedly become Bayer Leverkusen’s primary candidate to replace Xabi Alonso, who is tipped for a move to Real Madrid. Ten Hag, who was dismissed by United in October after a disappointing start to the Premier League season, has enjoyed success in his managerial career, including winning the Carabao Cup and FA Cup with United and guiding Ajax to five trophies, including three Eredivisie titles.

With Ten Hag now available after his sacking, German outlet Kicker claims that Leverkusen are keen on bringing him to the club. The Bundesliga side is preparing to part ways with Alonso, who is expected to take over at Real Madrid, following a highly successful season at Leverkusen.

Leverkusen’s search for a new manager comes after Alonso led them to a runners-up finish in the Bundesliga this season. He also helped the club secure a league and cup double last year, making history by going the entire Bundesliga season unbeaten and setting a European record of 51 consecutive games without defeat. Alonso’s success has elevated him to the top of Real Madrid’s managerial shortlist, especially after Carlo Ancelotti’s recent decision to turn down the Brazilian national team offer in favor of a lucrative contract in the Saudi Pro League.

In addition to Ten Hag, Kicker reports that Leverkusen has also approached Xavi, Barcelona’s former head coach, for the role. Despite the growing speculation around his future, Alonso remains tight-lipped, emphasizing the strong communication with Leverkusen’s management and the lack of pressure to make a hasty decision.

Leverkusen’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes, acknowledged that the club is actively considering potential replacements for Alonso, although no decision has been made yet. “We’re preparing for all possibilities,” Rolfes said, adding that the situation remains clear but requires patience before any clarity emerges.
