Enzo Fernández Pays Tribute to Maradona After Chelsea’s 3-2 UCL Win Over Napoli

3 Min Read

Softfootball understands that Chelsea’s 3-2 Champions League win away at Napoli wasn’t just about goals, tactics or qualification. It carried emotion, memory, and a sense of history, especially for Enzo Fernández, who made the night deeply personal.

Playing inside the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, the Argentine midfielder, as reported by Chelsea via their official X account, dedicated the victory to the late football icon, calling the venue a very special place to him.

He said:

What a win at a very special stadium for me. We miss you, Diego, you’re always present. On to the next round, c’mon Blues!

Fernández opened the scoring in the 18th minute, calmly converting from the penalty spot to give Chelsea an early lead in Naples yesterday. That goal would prove crucial, as the Blues eventually secured a result that confirmed direct qualification to the Champions League Round of 16.

For Napoli fans, the message landed heavy. Maradona is more than a legend in the city, he’s part of its soul. He led Napoli to two Serie A titles in 1987 and 1990, and since his passing in 2020, the stadium bearing his name has become a place of pilgrimage as much as football.

The game itself was chaotic after Fernández’s opener, Napoli hit back through local star Antonio Vergara, who produced a stunning solo effort. Rasmus Højlund then added another from close range just before halftime, swinging momentum firmly toward the hosts.

Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior reacted decisively at the break. A shift back to a four-man defence and the introduction of Cole Palmer changed the rhythm of the match.

João Pedro took full advantage. The Brazilian struck twice in the second half, first with a long-range effort that silenced the crowd, then with a composed finish that sealed a dramatic comeback.

Fernández, who also scored a penalty in Chelsea’s recent 3-1 victory against Crystal Palace, remained influential throughout, anchoring midfield and showing real leadership, his presence was key.

The victory saw Chelsea finish sixth in the league phase with 16 points, avoiding the playoff round. They now await Friday’s draw in Zurich, with possible opponents including PSG, Monaco, Newcastle, or Qarabag.

Beyond qualification, though, Fernández’s tribute stood tallest, proof that Maradona’s shadow still stretches far beyond Naples and still speaks through the game.
