Despite a strong season with Aston Villa, Emiliano Martinez is reportedly pushing for a transfer to Manchester United, with new manager Ruben Amorim open to the move. The Argentine goalkeeper, who helped Villa to a sixth-place finish and deep runs in multiple competitions, is said to view United as a club he can help restore to former glory.
Martinez, 32, has made clear his desire to become United’s number one, believing he can outperform Andre Onana, who struggled in his first two campaigns at Old Trafford. The World Cup winner also maintains a close relationship with United defender Lisandro Martinez, further fueling the possibility of a switch.
According to The Sun, Martinez has turned down offers from other clubs in hopes of completing a “dream” move to United. Amorim is reportedly a long-time admirer and previously tried to sign him for Sporting CP in 2020. Now at Old Trafford, he’s targeting strong characters and leaders — qualities he sees in the Aston Villa stopper.

The Portuguese boss has already begun rebuilding the squad, signing Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5m and chasing Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo. While Onana is eager to stay and prove himself, Amorim has not ruled out signing a new goalkeeper, especially with Monaco expressing interest in the Cameroonian.
Villa manager Unai Emery was recently asked about Martinez’s future and brushed off transfer rumours, although financial concerns at the club mean a sale isn’t off the table. Martinez’s emotional farewell at Villa Park and red card against United on the final day have only intensified speculation about his next move.
During Argentina’s international break, Martinez kept quiet when asked directly about his club future, saying he’s focused solely on national duty for now. Yet with the transfer window now open and United keen to revamp their spine, his Old Trafford ambition may soon be realised.
