Softfootball understands that Darren Fletcher has moved back into his role as Manchester United’s Under-18s head coach following a brief and rather intense period with the first team, as reported by sport expert Fabrizio Romano via his official X account.
He posted:
Darren Fletcher returns to Man United’s U18 coach role after helping as caretaker manager last week.
The 41-year-old was asked to step in after Ruben Amorim was sacked on January 5, 2026, a moment that once again left the club searching for stability.

Fletcher took charge of two matches during that spell, a Manchester United 2–2 draw at Burnley and a 2–1 FA Cup defeat to Brighton. Results aside, those games came at a tricky time when confidence inside the squad was clearly low.
Club officials were reportedly pleased with his calm handling of the situation, but he was never viewed as a long-term option. United wanted experience, and they wanted it quickly.

That search led to Michael Carrick being confirmed as caretaker manager until the end of the season, with Steve Holland joining him as assistant. The appointments were completed today, and the new staff will take charge immediately, starting with the Manchester derby this weekend.
Fletcher was offered a spot on Carrick’s coaching team, but he decided to return to the academy instead. It’s a role he knows well, and one he clearly values. Working with young players has always been central to his coaching path.

During his short time with the senior side, Fletcher described the experience as surreal. He spoke about trying to lift the mood and energy around the group, praising Bruno Fernandes as an unbelievable leader. Still, he admitted the FA Cup exit hurt.
Back with the U18s, Fletcher appears comfortable again. He has already helped develop players like JJ Gabriel and Jim Thwaites, and he remains clear about his priorities. It may not attract much attention, but it matters. And for Fletcher, it feels like the right place to be.
