Chelsea have been cautioned against pursuing a move for Lyon’s rising star Malick Fofana, with former defender William Gallas suggesting the club focus on strengthening other areas.
The 21-year-old winger is attracting serious interest after an impressive campaign in Ligue 1, where he netted 11 goals following his £17m transfer from Gent. Manchester United and Liverpool have also been monitoring the player, with Lyon reportedly demanding £43m for his services.
Despite the growing buzz around Fofana, Gallas believes Chelsea would be making a strategic error if they joined the race. “He’s still learning, and that’s not the kind of player Chelsea should be chasing now,” the former Blues centre-back told Prime Casino.
Gallas emphasised the need for experience in defence, particularly at right centre-back, as Chelsea prepare for the new Premier League season under Enzo Maresca. “They already have plenty of forwards. They need defensive solidity if they want to be competitive again,” he added.
The Blues are currently competing in the FIFA Club World Cup, which has slightly overshadowed their transfer activity. However, the upcoming domestic campaign is drawing close, with Chelsea’s Premier League opener scheduled at home against Crystal Palace on August 17.
Although the fixture list may appear favourable at first glance, Gallas warned that multiple early London derbies could create unexpected hurdles. “Those games will be intense. West Ham, Fulham, Brentford—they’ll all be desperate to beat Chelsea,” he said.
With games against Liverpool, Manchester United, and Arsenal all before December, Gallas insists Chelsea must enter the season with a balanced, focused squad—not one overloaded with untested attacking talents.
Fofana’s potential remains undeniable, but Gallas’ view is clear: Chelsea’s immediate needs lie at the back, not on the wings. Whether Maresca and the recruitment team agree remains to be seen.
