Chelsea are being encouraged to step into the race for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, just as Manchester United appear to be closing in on the prolific forward. Mbeumo played a key role in Brentford’s campaign, tallying 20 goals and seven assists in the Premier League last season.
United manager Ruben Amorim, who recently completed a £62.5 million deal for Wolves striker Matheus Cunha, is now targeting Mbeumo as part of his attacking overhaul. With multiple forwards potentially leaving Old Trafford — including Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Alejandro Garnacho — United are pushing to add more firepower up front.
Although Mbeumo is said to have chosen United over Arsenal, former Blues defender Frank Leboeuf believes Chelsea are missing an opportunity to reinforce their own front line by not making a move for the Brentford star, especially considering his consistent output in west London.
Chelsea’s attack struggled with inconsistency throughout the season. Nicolas Jackson was unpredictable in front of goal, while Christopher Nkunku failed to make an impact after his £52 million move and is expected to be sold. The club has already agreed a £30 million deal for Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap, but more signings are being considered.
While Delap is viewed as a promising addition, questions remain about his ability to meet the demands at Stamford Bridge right away. The pressure will be intense for the young forward, and some feel proven Premier League performers like Mbeumo would offer more immediate returns.
In parallel, Chelsea are also pursuing other targets, including AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan. Though admired for his quality, there are suggestions that the club might be better served by investing in a veteran centre-back to fill the leadership void left by Thiago Silva’s departure.
With Amorim shaping his squad rapidly and United pressing ahead with multiple signings, Chelsea’s transfer decisions in the coming weeks could define their trajectory under Enzo Maresca — especially if they pass up players already thriving in the Premier League.
