Chelsea Legend Slams Club for Transfer Failures That Could Ruin Their Season

Chelsea’s recent slump has raised concerns, and former club midfielder John Obi Mikel believes a lack of transfer activity in January could cost them dearly. After a promising start under new manager Enzo Maresca, Chelsea’s form has dipped, with only three wins in their last nine matches, leaving them fourth in the Premier League—13 points behind leaders Liverpool.

The team’s struggles have amplified calls for reinforcements, particularly in goal and attack. Robert Sanchez, who leads the league in errors resulting in goals, remains under scrutiny. Meanwhile, striker Nicolas Jackson has gone eight games without scoring, shaking confidence in Chelsea’s frontline.

On The Obi One Podcast, Mikel addressed Jackson’s struggles, stating, “As a striker, if you haven’t scored in eight, that is massive.” However, he emphasized that the team’s scoring burden shouldn’t rest solely on Jackson. “We need goals from [Noni] Madueke, Pedro Neto, and [Jadon] Sancho. Not just Nicolas.”

Maresca substituted Jackson early in Chelsea’s comeback win over West Ham, introducing 18-year-old Marc Guiu. While Mikel acknowledges Guiu’s potential, he insists Chelsea should not be relying on a teenager for crucial goals. “He’s young and talented, but not the striker you bring in when you need goals.”

Mikel is frustrated that Chelsea failed to strengthen in the winter window. “The window is shut, and we didn’t sign a striker or goalkeeper. That’s another missed opportunity to reinforce the squad for a top-four finish.”

Sancho’s form has also raised concerns, with Mikel questioning his recent performances. “He started well, and we were all excited. But since December, we haven’t seen anything.” He urged Sancho to rediscover his attacking spark, warning against complacency.

With Chelsea facing a tough second half of the season, Mikel’s criticism highlights growing worries among fans. Whether the squad can turn things around remains to be seen.
