Chelsea are positioning themselves to outpace Manchester United in the pursuit of Everton’s highly-rated defender Jarrad Branthwaite, who could cost around £70 million. The 22-year-old enjoyed a standout 2023/24 season, even earning a senior England cap, although he narrowly missed the Euro 2024 squad.

The Blues have already struck early in the market by snapping up Liam Delap from Ipswich Town in a £30 million deal, beating United to the punch. That momentum continues as Enzo Maresca eyes more reinforcements to strengthen his squad after a successful debut season at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea returned to the Champions League and lifted the Conference League trophy under his guidance.

Now, Maresca is aiming to bolster his backline. With the Club World Cup on the horizon and the transfer window open early from June 1 to June 10, Chelsea are pushing to sign Branthwaite. A previous move for Dean Huijsen didn’t materialise, as the Bournemouth defender joined Real Madrid instead, and Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace is also on their radar.

Meanwhile, United remain long-time admirers of Branthwaite. Despite failed bids last summer – including a £50 million offer – they continue to monitor the centre-back. But with no European competition next season, United’s appeal may fall short. Erik ten Hag eventually turned to Matthijs de Ligt, though defensive reinforcements remain a priority with Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans released, and doubts over Lisandro Martinez’s fitness.

Everton’s resurgence under David Moyes saw a key defensive partnership form between Branthwaite and James Tarkowski, crucial in stabilising the team’s performances. Moyes has made it clear he doesn’t want to lose Branthwaite, especially with two years remaining on his contract plus an optional year.

Even so, Branthwaite is reportedly only open to leaving Goodison Park for a Champions League club. That gives Chelsea a major edge as they prepare for a busy summer of transfers under their new boss.
